10000 Mile march in support of disadvantaged veterans
A team from Pearson Engineering is furthering their support to disadvantaged veterans, with a year-long walking challenge, to raise funds for and awareness of those who have served as they transition out of the Armed Forces. The initiative comes after the company was recognised this year with a Gold Award in the Ministry of Defence’s Employer Recognition Scheme for our support to the defence community.
As part of Walking with the Wounded’s 1,000 Mile March initiative, the ambitious challenge will see 16 Pearson Engineering participants attempt to walk 10,000 miles collectively – the equivalent of the distance from London to Malaysia or 10,000 times around the perimeter of the Armstrong Works. In doing so, we aim to raise £5,000 which will provide more than sixty 1-2-1 online mental health sessions, support six veterans through Walking with the Wounded’s mental health programme or, five veterans through their Employment programme.
Established in 2010, Walking with the Wounded is a leading charity for ex-military in the UK which provides a pathway for disadvantaged veterans to re-integrate back into society and sustain their independence.
Field Service Representative at Pearson Engineering, Geoff Hill said: “I wanted to take part in the challenge to help raise some funds for a very deserving cause in these times of severe financial strain on all charities.”
Geoff served as a mechanic for 22 years before becoming a Company Sergeant Major for two years. He said “having witnessed first-hand the injuries suffered by those who have served, I feel we should support our Armed Forces personnel when they return from duty and after they have left the service. The injuries are sometimes only ‘surface damage’, but the mental scars and the mental injuries are harder to treat. Walking with the Wounded gives personnel the chance to have a focus to change their outlook on life in general. It helps give people a sense of wellbeing and being part of a group, community or family. They listen to the people – without judging – and they coach and guide them too.”
The challenge began on the Remembrance Day – and is scheduled to end on Remembrance Day 2021.
We would be hugely grateful if you would consider sponsoring our team who are all making a daily commitment for a very worthy cause.
